"PICC line and availability"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Radiology

(as a service user),

Was needing some long term antibiotics but unfortunately the last time I had OPAT but this was no longer open to me after a serious infection in my lederflex line.

There doesn't seem to be enough staff who are competent with insertion of the PICC line. This seems to be an ongoing problem as I have had problems with the availability of staff for this procedure. First one I needed was in 2014 for IV antibiotics but with no PICC line I remained in hospital as an inpatient, which was surely at more cost to the NHS??

Dear amanda30,

Thank you for your correspondence and I apologise that you have had to wait for your PICC line.

Radiology have been aware of this and due to the shortage of Radiologists to carry out this specialised procedure we are looking at developing other Healthcare workers to take on this role.We now have a Specialised nurse trained and several more in training which should increase the capacity for the PICC line service.

Kind Regards

Lesley
