"Removal of polyps via MyoSure"

About: St Michael's Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

A previous hysteroscopy showed several polyps, including a large one which took up a lot of space in my womb. I’m 55 and thought I had been through the menopause, but was experiencing light, watery bleeding which seemed to be getting more frequent. A previous biopsy had ruled out cancer and it was decided to do a procedure called a MyoSure, which is a tiny device that nibbles away at the fibroids.

I was sent a leaflet, but the writing was quite small, so it was quite hard to read parts of it, even with my glasses. I think this needs to be fed back to the people who produce the leaflet.

The consultant was very friendly and professional and she made me feel more confident, as I was a bit nervous. There were 2 other staff members in the room and we all ended up chatting about our cats, which really helped me relax. I had an injection to numb the cervix so she could insert a speculum. She then inserted a camera and the device to remove the polyps. It did hurt and was uncomfortable, but I couldn’t feel the fibroids being removed. It took about 10 minutes.

After she had finished the consultant suggested I have a Mirena coil fitted, which I agreed, so she did it there and then. That didn’t hurt at all. I think the consultant was very skilled, but also careful and didn’t rush, which meant my experience was better. I still don’t understand why I couldn’t have gas and air, as I feel it would have given me a virtually pain free experience. I really feel very strongly that I should be allowed to have this option.
