About: Queen Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a carer),

we recieved an enormous reassurance upon her arrival into A&E. The patient has special needs so situations like this can be very distressing for her, the staff on her wards were beyond fantastic and went completely out their way to support her with her additional needs and to make her feel comfortable and at ease. They demonstrated patience and showed understanding at the time needed to attempt a blood test on her due to being distressed and afraid. They showed their knowledge through many different ways and the atmosphere of both A&E MAJOR RED and BLUE WARD AMU is heartwarming and welcoming. Upon waiting you can hear the friendly chats and laughs of all staff that is very easing, I found all staff absolutely amazing especially the ones who directly supported her

A&E: Nasuard (spelling may be wrong, who I heard to be called ‘Nash’),

Lynsey (appeared to be a cleaner on the A&E department with a logo saying “engie”)

Mika

Nash went out his way to speak to her in a calming tone to relax her, he didn’t hesitate to do all he could to help and his persona created a safe atmosphere bringing great ease to a difficult situation. He went out his way to try different methods to provide the correct treatment for her and was supporting his colleagues when they needed extra help, without hesitation. His tone of voice provided comfort.

Mika was a very bubbly character and her personality really did shine through her which made us feel more relaxed and created a safe feeling. She was always asking if we were okay and comfortable and if we needed anything she reassured us to just ask and that anything was okay to ask! Very understanding and friendly, she made a very nice cup of tea too and went out her way to find a spouted beaker to suit the patience needs! Didn’t mind how long it took her to support someone, as long as she could meet their needs she was happy to help no matter how long it took!

Lynsey was making sure the place was so clean and upon times I did see her and she was really putting in a lot of effort to ensure the cubicles were safe and clean for the next patient. She had a friendly smile and did her job perfectly!

On A&E MAJOR RED we also had a lady with short chin-length brown hair, blue eyes, pale complexion and multiple piercings in her ears who supported us, I didn’t catch her name but she was such a lovely lady who demonstrated such patience and understanding. She really didn’t mind about how long it took her to ensure the patient felt safe and received the treatment and tests they required. She was one of the first people we interacted with when arriving in the A&E department and she made the situation instantly a lot better by her overall presentation, brilliant people skills and her lovely personality.

In the BLUE WARD AMU, everyone there was so understanding to the additional needs and went out their way to find appropriate equipment (floor bed, cot sides ect) for the patient. Always asking if we were comfortable and if we needed anything, spoiling us with hot chocolate and water! Happy to help and extremely willing to do anything to ensure the patients additional needs were fulfilled to a beyond high standard. The patient can become very distressed and due to past history, normally requires sedation for any kind of test or examination however she hasn’t received any of this because she didn’t need it! They made her feel so comfortable she didn’t need to be sedated, they were more than we could have asked for and it was fantastic! They went their way to sit and speak to the patient despite her being non-verbal and you could see their caring traits thriving in them making the atmosphere beyond great. One lady in particular who stood out with Courtney, she went out her way to listen to the patients interests and achievements (could overhear her do it with every patient!) and she was not hesitant to help at all with any kind of support needed! She was fantastic and truly passionate about her job, a great credit to the BLUE WARD and really did bring great happiness to the patient and went out her way to make sure all appropriate equipment was in place for her needs. Made us feel very welcome and looked after and her passion to help was shining!

Overall, an amazing experience at QA hospital and couldn’t have asked for better support apart from the fact that even though Courtney asked 5 different wards, we were unable to be provided with a floor bed, cot sides or matts for the floor (patient likely to throw self from bed). I understand equipment is limited and despite this the staff on AMU went out their ways to fully observe patient and even sit with her during night to make sure she was safe and not in any danger of falling.

Thank you to everyone, you are true heroes.
