"I was told being ill was my fault"

About: Royal Liverpool University Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I suffered probably the worst illness that has ever happened to me for 5 days. It started on a Friday night with a sore throat, then everything went sharply downhill since the next morning: I began to feel extreme heat and chills, vomit for several episodes each day (sometimes even for water), fatigue and dizziness. Normal cold & flu medicine failed in turning the tide of worsening symptoms. As my GP was registered in Manchester, I had no choice but to go to the A&E for help. The nearest one to my place is the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. However, only my third attempt to receive treatment there worked.

The first time I sought help there, it was a good experience as the doctor was attentive and caring. More importantly, I was not feeling too bad during the time in the hospital (I usually felt better in afternoons when my body temperature was more stable).

However, the situation kept worsening. After throwing up for 3 straight hours from midnight to 3 am 2 days later, I went there again and this was the depressing experience that made me decide to share it with you. Beforehand, I want to make it clear that I am not challenging that "doctor's" professionalism as they must have a medical degree that I do not have. That doctor decided to let me go home without any more testing or treatment and the reasons they gave me were as follow:

1. My numbers were okay even my temperature was normal even though I felt my body burning up.

2. Throwing up for 3 hours is not serious, even though it lasted for 4 days already, happened several times a day, and shows no sign of getting better.

3. "It is YOUR FAULT": To help them diagnose, I mentioned to her that I took marijuana in the early morning of the day I fell ill. She believed that this was the cause, and then told me it was my fault. First, after a full-body test,  the cause of my illness is still unknown. It might be premature to jump to the conclusion, especially with no medical evidence (in my opinion). Also, for a patient who was being unwell and vulnerable, blame can only make it worse. It also showed that the person in the office had no compassion towards me.

4. I was told I coul wait here for 5 hours for another doctor in the middle of our meeting, they already became impatient and said that to me. In my eyes, the purpose was to get rid of me as soon as possible. It was a behavior of power abuse. In that situation, I truly felt powerless and had no choice but to leave.

Later on, I felt even worse, throwing up from 6 pm to the next day at 6 am with little sleep. I went to that hospital again and luck finally came upon me. I was admitted by the hospital, received all kinds of testing and proper treatments. Infections and high temperature were found. This time, the doctor was a very caring and smiley person. He always gave me smiles while speaking to me, which helped me even better than the medication.

I appreciate the help from the NHS and I am truly glad I am all good now!
