"Child being admitted to ED"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My grandson was admitted to ED last night, after a 111 call, then a return call by a doctor, who told my son to take him themselves, he said they will be expecting you.

Upon arriving my son dropped off his partner and 8 month old baby, he then parked the car. Went to the ED department and was greeted by a  very rude security Person. He wasn’t allowed in. He waited in the car for over 4 hours, contact with his partner by text. Picture this your first child very poorly, you can’t be with them or support your partner, mental torture. I know there is Covid, but there needs to be common sense as stated by Boris and exceptions.

Dear Fire,

My name is Jane and I am the Clinical Matron for Emergency Care.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for any distress that this situation caused to your son and his partner. Unfortunately, the Trust has had to enforce very strict rules in relation to relatives and visitors throughout the hospital, This is for the protection of patients, staff and the few visitors that are allowed in the hospital due to exceptional circumstances.

The rules for attendances to the emergency department with an ill child is that one parent only is allowed in with the child. We have a very small paediatric waiting room and with social distancing enforced, this has had a significant impact on the amount of people who can attend. I am sure you will agree that it is better for sick children and one parent to attend rather than a waiting room full of parents or other relatives and another ill child having to wait in the car to be seen which is what would unfortunately happen.

Having said this, I appreciate that these times are very difficult and it is only natural that your son would want to be with his baby and be able to support his partner, and I am sorry that we were not able to accommodate this.

With regard to the security guard on the door, I will feed this back to the security team, and I apologise for his rudeness.

Thank you for feeding this back to us and I hope your grandson is recovering from his illness well.

Kind Regards

Jane
