"East Kilbride end of life care in Forefaulds Care Home - Sanctuary Care"

About: Forefaulds Care Home NHS Lanarkshire

(as a relative),

My mother spent her final days in Forefaulds care home East Kilbride. I do feel some of the staff are very professional and understand the very diverse and ever changing needs of dementia.

What we found though whilst she was we had a lot of cause for concerns with records showing conflicting errors where she is recorded as being asleep and consuming food and or drink she cant do both. The rules are there to protect the vulnerable, care homes need to follow these rules and chase up doctors visits. Also the NHS need to ensure patients are safe or they are guilty of allowing neglect. The dedicated Care Home Dr called out towards the end but a week went by without them visiting. We felt that it is for the care home to tell the doctor of the severity. One side has made an error in judgement and generally I was not happy with the last few weeks and days of her care. This meant her dignity was tested to the limit. Patients need to die with minimal pain, discomfort and dignity.

Having pursued a complaint the behaviour of some staff members is being investigated and I have concerns about the management of the home.

It looks to me that there is a danger that blame is assigned to junior staff who actually do the hard work. Also that vulnerable patients have no one to speak for them.

Dear felixthecat

May I firstly express my sympathy to you and your family following the sad loss of your mother. I can appreciate that this must be a very difficult time for you and your family.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion. I am glad you found some of the nursing staff to be professional and understood the complexities of caring for patients with dementia. I will pass on your thanks to them.

However, I am so sorry to hear that you did have cause for concern, in particular the discrepancies noted on your mother’s health records and the delay in the Care Home contacting the designated GP to visit your mother.

In order for us to investigate this further, I would ask you to contact our Primary Care Patient Affairs Team on 01698 858321 or via email at PatientAffairs.Primarycare@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk, quoting Care Opinion793244.

Kind regards.

Lesley
