"Mental Health Ward at Rampton"

About: Rampton Hospital / Mental Health Service

(as the patient),

I feel that me and my peers are being bullied/discriminated against but not by all staff. Staff don’t let me progress. No one will do the right thing for us patients.

If we don’t get up in morning to have a shower, we not allowed out of our rooms, we even have to eat in there. Only allowed 3 things out of locker a day. Not allowed games console and not allowed stereo.

Only have 1 change of clothing in room at any one time. Being on icu ward we have less options of off ward activities. Only allowed to take one shopping bag to pts shop and its 2 on other wards. Can’t get a drink when we want as we don’t have flasks like other wards.

Some staff are good at getting us out for fresh air.

Food is always hot

Most staff are respectful but not all.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. This is a difficult story to read but again, thank you for posting it.

I will let others respond to your concerns.

It is good to know that you also mention the staff who have been sorting the Fresh Air breaks out and that you think that is working well and is good... that is always important. Thank you re your comments about the food. I do know the catering team and ward staff work hard at this.

Thanks again for your time.

Nigel

It is very concerning to hear your experiences of care on the ICU and I am grateful that you were able to raise these concerns directly with me on Monday when I met with you on the ward.

I think it is very important to be transparent about how we deliver care, I have requested that we have an out of care stream review of the processes on Adwick ward in response to our conversation, I have also specifically requested that patient’s views are sought to inform the review.

As I mentioned to you on Monday, I have additionally asked Adwick's Deputy Matron to look at the custom and practice on the ward, we are all very keen to ensure there are no unnecessary blanket restrictions in place. I appreciate that some restrictions are due to the ward been an ICU however there are lots of opportunities to be more individualised in our approach. It is important that every patient is treated as an individual, with respect and kindness. A safeguarding alert has been actioned with regards to your concerns around discrimination.

On a positive note, it is pleasing to hear that you report most of the staff are respectful. Please be assured, as I mentioned Monday, I have heard your concerns, I have taken them seriously and I am taking actions to address the issues you have raised. Thank you for your candour and allowing me and the matron team to address your concerns.

Hi, Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know your experience on this ward.

It takes great courage to speak up but when people do I hope you will get a positive outcome or explanation.

I have discussed this with your Modern Matron who I know will respond to this but she is very keen to hear your view and believe is or will be arranging to meet with you and work with you to how we can make changes for you or explain why things are done the way they are. I know she is keen to listen and work with you.

Please let us know if you see changes as I am keen to hear your experience once you have met with your Matron and what ideas you have both agreed to work on to improve your experience

Take Care

Adele Fox

Please can I advise you about the changes which I hope are evident to you. I have been working hard with the Ward's Leadership Team to ensure we are considering all blanket restrictions. I am pleased to hear that the daily routines have become more flexible to suit the needs of individuals, with your specific concerns addressed. Under new ward management, the arrangement of regular fortnightly community meetings have commenced (rather than monthly) and this allows for discussion around any restrictions for a flexible approach, as well as ideas of how to continually improve the culture and environment.

It was pleasing to see that when I attended the ward community meeting recently there was a good attendance from the patient community with constructive feedback. The leadership team consider community meetings to be the bedrock of how we implement change and ensure your voice is at the centre of what we do.

I look forward to seeing more positive changes moving forward, I understand there is an art project underway, I will be very keen to share this amazing project once completed.
