"A&E experience"

About: Croydon University Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I was quite touched by the care and support which I received over 2 days at the end of September and start of October 2020  from your staff in the A&E department.

I was feeling quite unwell and in pain, after checking in Nurse Joel was my first interaction with staff. He was very friendly, compassionate, caring, empathic and professional in his approach which was quite refreshing.

Later when I was seen by the Doctor, though in pain I was taken by her warmth, empathic understanding, she made me feel valued and that she was there to help and would do what she could to help alleviate my discomfort and find the root cause.

She listened to what I had to say and really exercised person-centred approach and unconditional positive regard. She was warm, competent, caring, patient and understanding in her as well as very thorough in ensuring she investigated what was happening with me. Though I received medication, I felt the therapeutic treatment which I received was equally important and effective.

Sometimes as patients our illness is exacerbated by stress and being supported by someone who really cares can go a long way.

There were other members of staff whose names I don't have who also worked with Joel and Dr Nkechinyere. Such as the nice Nurse who administered my suppository. On the second day I came back for a scan and again, the experience of being cared for, valued and respected continued with Dr Dom and Consultant Oliver, who listened to me and were very patient and empathic in their approach.

I actually feel as if I have walked in ill and quite concerned and my ill-health was catered for, my concerns were laid to rest, efforts were made to find out what was happening and I went home feeling that I was actually respected, valued and cared for in a compassionate and professional way.

I just had to take time out to show appreciation to such Angels. 👼👼🏾👼🏿
