"I could have made a more Informed decision"

About: Solihull Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I was assessed on arrival, temp taken, health questions asked, BP, etc signed paperwork as  having procedure without sedation only mouth spray.  I was very nervous however the nurses were very friendly and helpful and helped to calm me down.

I was taken to the surgical area and put on the bed, I was then approached by the doctor performing the endoscopy, who said they were training, I was surprised at this info and asked them how many they had done in the past, they said ‘ a few’? I was getting more and more nervous but didn’t want to make a fuss, the snr was there to assist if needed.

The procedure was difficult and I panicked, the snr had to take over at some stage.  I feel very strongly that I should have been asked on arrival if I was happy for a trainee do the procedure where I could have made a more Informed decision.  I understand they need to learn but I really do feel that trainee drs should only do endoscopies on patients who are sedated until they are more competent.
Overall it was a very unhappy experience.
