"Having a Stroke"

About: Adult community health services / Stroke services (community) Musgrove Park Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I had my stroke in August while I was asleep, so I didn't feel anything. Thought I had slept on my left arm and it gone dead as normal. I waited till the next day and went to A&E.

I had all the different tests, bloods etc,  you name they did it. The Doctor said it could be a stroke, a trapped nerve or a muscular problem. He then said he would try and get me a MRI scan, after an hour he said they couldn't fit me in, and I would have to go back on Monday. They didn't give me any medication to be going on with, and off I went.

Monday came around had the scan and reported back to A&E. One of the ward sister's called me in and told me it was a little stroke which had taken out my left hand.

Then a nurse came down from the Stroke ward and said I was being admitted, she then did all the Civic test, and gave me aspirin. Then I was whisked up to the to the Stroke ward where there was more checks, blood pressure, pulse, and temp.

The Care on the ward was second to none, nothing was a problem. I stayed in hospital for a few days because really the only thing that was wrong with me was my left arm had a mind of its own

After being home for a couple of days the Stroke Rehab in the community team started to come round every other day,the service and Care was fantastic. They gave me lots of exercises to do which started me on the road to recovery. Which is where I am now. It's September and I have just been honorably discharged from the Stroke Rehab in the Community Team who I can't thank enough.

Hi Whispers94,

Thank you so much for your feedback, I have already shared this with the team and it makes the staff feel so valued. Having a stroke is a life changing event and it often makes us think and reflect on how lucky we are.
