"IRP - Roadmap to Recovery"

About: Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Aldershot

(as a service user),

Once you have made the decision, honestly, that you need to overcome your addiction - in my case, to alcohol, you need to develop the skills and tools to get yourself out of the quagmire you have been stuck in, and prevent yourself falling back in again.

This is what the IRP did for me, it helped me build the ladder I needed to bring myself out of the dark depths I had fallen into.

When we are stuck in that quagmire, we descend into negative patterns of behaviour, can feel isolated, withdrawn and despondent - all of these areas need addressing, but there is no magic bullet, we need to learn to make small, sustainable improvements in all of these areas.

This requires a structured approach and methodology, and one which the IRP excels at providing.

By focussing on specific areas in each of the sessions, it helps you realise the importance of often simple things that we have, through our addiction, lost sight of. And this is a key to the success of IRP, reinforcement of things that we already know, but have chosen to ignore the significance of.

Another huge benefit of being structured in approach is that more time can be devoted to tackling specific issues one at a time, as the programme progresses, we develop the confidence to talk frankly and honestly about the problems we have had and/or are having.

We have to acknowledge, and become comfortable with the realisation that we are only ever one drink away from a lapse or a relapse. Identifying and managing the thoughts and feelings that could lead us towards that one drink is a fundamental building block of sustained recovery. IRP provides the techniques we have to master - it is then up to us to do just that.

I cannot praise the programme enough. At first I found it a little intimidating, but gradually, things started to sink in and I could see how this would work for me, and equally found that, after a while I was able to contribute back into the group, and that is a great feeling.

A big thanks from me to all at Inclusions for the incredible work you do.

Thank you for your recent post. I am delighted that you have found the IRP structured groupwork programme so helpful in your recovery and that you had the courage to keep attending even though you found it a bit intimidating at first. The programme addresses many aspects of recovery and enables you to explore issues gradually, learn new coping strategies and tools to manage your addiction along the way. It is also an important part of recovery that as a group you have the opportunity to share your learning and offer and receive support from each other.

I wish you all the very best for the future and will pass on your positive feedback to the Team.
