"Hip replacement surgery"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My Mum was referred to Crosshouse Hospital for a full hip replacement.  COVID struck and her operation was cancelled (as she expected).  Months passed and she was finally delighted to get a new date for her operation.  She attended her pre-op clinic in preparation for her operation.

During the appointment she was devastated to be told that her operation had been cancelled due to the hospital no longer accepting elective operations.

She has since been advised that she has to go back to her GP to be re-referred to a consultant at Ayr Hospital and start the whole process again, which could take another year.

My Mum is in a huge degree of pain.  She is unable to go out and her quality of life is being impacted profoundly.  It seems grossly unfair that she cannot be simply transferred to to the Ayr list and is being treated according to her postcode.

Dear Wyllie

Thank you for taking the time to post this feed back with regards to your Mum's planned hip replacement surgery, I’m sorry to hear of your Mums's situation and realise how difficult it must be for her awaiting surgery. The pandemic has had a significant impact on our elective capacity in recent months and we continue to be in an emergency situation with reduced elective capacity, I can however confirm that NHS Ayrshire & Arran continue to provide an elective orthopaedic surgical service, including the provision of hip replacement surgery.

It is difficult to provide any further specific comment on when your Mum's treated will take place without having her details. Please feel free to contact me direct on 01563 826146 with additional information and I will be more than happy to look into your Mum's case futher.

I hope in the meantime this gives you some assurance.

Best wishes

Jackie
