About: Torbay Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

we were recently referred to the gastro team from torbay hospital due to my daughter needing an operation that our local hospital could not preform.. we were placed under the care of Dr Pearl and his team..

from first point of contact with him he was extremely through and knowledgeable in the procedure that she needed..

a little bit about my daughter she is over 15 years old and has an extensive medical history and severe disabilities so although her age on paper is in her teens she is the age of a 3 month old child.

they took all her needs into account from patient flow all the way through to being discharged.

we were meant to be on sheppard ward but they managed to get her a side room on oak ward, which made the whole experience more managable for us..

day surgery were amazing, and recovery went above and beyond when she took a while to recover from the surgery.

the only criticism i have is that she was laid on a stretcher for 3 hours and due to being quadriplegic cerebral palsy, having spinal rods and no hip sockets it was far too long and she became really uncomfortable.

oak ward were amazing especially the sister who admitted us, her name escapes me....

the gastro team and peadiatric team were brilliant with all of her needs and ours as a family....

one thing that did unsettle me just before discharge was there  was a paediatric doctor who was at the nurses station organising tta for us and i found them to be a little unprofessional,

the door to our cubicle was open and their voice was very loud and there was a discussion over medication and i found her to be quite blasé about my daughter's needs as i overheard the whole conversation..

the hospital is spotlessly clean and the procedures in place for the current covid situation put me at ease...

i would really like to emphasise the lengths Dr Pearl went to over the weekend exceeded my expectations and he is a credit to your hospital...

i met so many lovely staff and being a hca in torbay hospital so working in the nhs myself i would not hesitate to bring my daughter back to you id the case arose..
