"Airlifted direct to CCU"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Cardiology South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as a service user),

I was having tea in bed one morning. I am a fit active 64 year old. I developed central chest pain. It took a while to realise I should call 999. First responder came, ambulance came, they did an ECG, and called the air ambulance. I was rushed straight into cardiac theatre, and had an angiogram. They discovered a tear in an artery supplying the heart. They decided on treatment by medication.

I was taken to CCU. My nurse was Chloe, with Yvonne helping her.

I felt safe, and looked after in a very unexpected and frightening situation. I was constantly reassured. Everything was explained, by Chloe, and other staff  who were all also amazing and the consultants. My rare condition was understood and they seemed to take a lot of time looking at results in detail, doing more tests working out what was going on. They also spoke to a relevant specialist in London.

Chloe was my nurse on 3 of the 4 days I was here. She was really kind caring and knew so much, even though she has not been qualified long. I was really impressed, and well looked after.

Yvonne is such a lovely lady. She really wanted to do the very best, and listened to me and we talked a lot which I needed.

I worked in the health service 20 years ago, and can only say I have never been on a better ward, working or as a patient.

Dear Sea Swimmer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I was so pleased to read about the care you received on CCU from Chloe, Yvonne and the wider team. I was glad to see that they were understanding of your rare condition and listened to you while you were on the ward.

I have shared your story with the Ward Manager on CCU and with our Learning From Excellence team who celebrate staff who provide great care which I can see you definitely received from Chloe and Yvonne.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us.

Best wishes,

Jess
