"Dietician Service Hairmyres"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical/Gastroenterology (Ward 11)

(as a service user),

Letter dated start of September received pushing my appointment further back by two months.  I was exclusively fed by a particular brand of oral nutritional supplement drinks & have been reporting symptoms of vomiting & huge volumes of mucus production for some considerable time.  This was the cause of my recent hospitalisation with Sepsis & Aspiration Pneumonia.  This is the 3rd such event, each one impacting on my lung capacity.

On the days when I was too unwell to have the supplements, the vomiting & mucus production subsided. At the risk of stating the obvious, there is clearly a connection.

When I phoned to try to get an urgent Dietetic telephone appointment, I was met with point blank refusal despite explaining the position.

I am living on porridge, soup & custard, not what you'd call a balanced diet & that will have consequences.  It had also caused huge changes in bowel habits that are restricting my life even further than my autoimmune condition already does.

I have to ask, what are the dieticians doing that prevents them dealing with patients.  My gastroenterologist is temporarily unavailable & no one apparently covers their patients who have urgent concerns.  Very very disappointing.

Dear Madge51

I am sorry to hear about your appointment being rescheduled and pushed back by two months. As a service we would not routinely delay appointments by this length of time. I would like to offer you the opportunity to discuss this with myself on 01355 585445 so I can understand where we are going wrong and see how we can assist you.

Kind regards

Mairead Keegan

Thanks

Update posted by Madge51 (a service user)

Hi Angela, Having spoken with Mairead yesterday, it appears that the letter I received dated the start of Sept was superceded by an appointment being made for this week. Unfortunately, I have not received any communication to make me aware of this.. Mairead is trying to find out what happened to prompt this appointment being made & what happened to the letter that should have been sent but has not been received by me.

It makes sense for that to happen & then if needs be, patient affairs can get it involved.

Regards

Madge51

Dear Madge 51

Thank you for speaking to me last week. As discussed, I am investigating the issue regarding your appointment and your concerns that you did not receive any correspondence to inform you of the change of appointment. As agreed, once this is completed I will let you know the outcome.

Kind regards

Mairead
