"Not the best patient care"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Medicine (wards 8, 10, 11, 14, 18 & 27)

(as a relative),

My grandpa was recently admitted to SATA after a fall where he had lain all night and developed a temperature.  The care he received in SATA was second to none and the staff were amazing! He was then transferred to ward 15 where again the staff were amazing! My grandpa is 90 and has dementia.  The staff in ward 15 had him up out of bed singing and dancing and I cannot thank them enough!

He was then transferred to ward 8 and this is where the problems began. He was left in bed all day, not changed into his own pajamas despite having at least 3 clean pairs and the patient in the bed next to him commented how he cried all day and not one member of staff came to see if he was OK.  My grandpa is no longer able to feed himself and despite this the staff left him to feed himself which he was unable to do and his lunch therefore ended up all over the floor and himself.  On one occasion I was helping him to eat when staff members, who I felt were very rude, gave me into trouble for actually helping him!

I understand that all staff are very busy but to leave a 90 year old man with advanced dementia sitting in a chair all day every day for weeks with little or no stimulation is completely unacceptable.  He was so upset and the change in him from ward 15 to ward 8 was terrible.  By the time he left ward 8 he couldn't walk and had developed delirium.

As an NHS employee I completely understand how busy everyone is and the extreme pressure everyone has and are continuing to face however we cannot forget that we are nursing extremely vulnerable patients and it is extremely upsetting for them also to be away from family for long periods without any visitors.

Dear paisley2505

Firstly thank you so much for sharing yours and your Grandpa's experience. That must have been a really frightening time for him after falling and lying all night. He sounds an amazing man and it's great to hear such positive feedback for some of our areas. I am so proud to share this with my teams in SATA and Ward 15.

Secondly and as equally important, your feedback around the negative experience is vital. Only with your open and honest reflection can we as a team make changes to prevent this happening to another family member. If acceptable to yourself, can I please pick this up in my role as Lead Nurse and share with colleagues? Whilst not directly responsible for Ward 8, I do work closely with my counterpart for that area and we will combine our efforts to affect a change based upon your feedback. We will share with the team to enable an understanding of both positive and negative experiences. Only with you using the Care Opinion forum, are we able to achieve this.

Please do not hesitate in calling me on 07815 705687 should you wish to discuss further and please be reassured, that a change will take place thanks to your feedback.

Thank you again for taking the time to share this experience and allowing us the opportunity to make a change for the better.

Gerry
