My grandpa was recently admitted to SATA after a fall where he had lain all night and developed a temperature. The care he received in SATA was second to none and the staff were amazing! He was then transferred to ward 15 where again the staff were amazing! My grandpa is 90 and has dementia. The staff in ward 15 had him up out of bed singing and dancing and I cannot thank them enough!
He was then transferred to ward 8 and this is where the problems began. He was left in bed all day, not changed into his own pajamas despite having at least 3 clean pairs and the patient in the bed next to him commented how he cried all day and not one member of staff came to see if he was OK. My grandpa is no longer able to feed himself and despite this the staff left him to feed himself which he was unable to do and his lunch therefore ended up all over the floor and himself. On one occasion I was helping him to eat when staff members, who I felt were very rude, gave me into trouble for actually helping him!
I understand that all staff are very busy but to leave a 90 year old man with advanced dementia sitting in a chair all day every day for weeks with little or no stimulation is completely unacceptable. He was so upset and the change in him from ward 15 to ward 8 was terrible. By the time he left ward 8 he couldn't walk and had developed delirium.
As an NHS employee I completely understand how busy everyone is and the extreme pressure everyone has and are continuing to face however we cannot forget that we are nursing extremely vulnerable patients and it is extremely upsetting for them also to be away from family for long periods without any visitors.
