"Birth of my baby girl"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital Dr Gray's Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I attended Dr Grays when I was 36 weeks pregnant as I felt unwell and had reduced movements. Very quickly I was diagnosed with pre eclampsia and was transferred by ambulance to Aberdeen. A lovely midwife called Karen accompanied me and her reassurance definitely made it a smooth transfer as I was extremely anxious.

Once in Aberdeen the midwives were amazing from the start. I was advised I would have to stay until my baby arrived which they were planning on delivering at 38 weeks. I was really worried about being away from my partner and little boy as this was when Aberdeen had re entered lockdown so visiting had been suspended. I then went into labour naturally 2 days later the same day of there was a bad storm in Aberdeen which caused water damage to the ward I was in. The midwives acted so quickly in a stressful situation. I was very anxious going into labour at 36 weeks and being on my own. My partner just made it in time for my emergency section. My section was not smooth sailing and came with a few complications meaning my baby was born lifeless and had to spend some time in neonatal.

I was then transferred to the midwife led unit which was being used as a postnatal ward. The midwives Gemma & Amy looked after me the most with auxiliary Susan. These 3 were amazing...nothing was too much for them and they made sure anytime I wanted to visit my baby girl in the unit they arranged it quickly and helped me down to the unit. Amy's humour and kind heart on nightshift made my first night away from my baby easier and cheered me up.

Being from Elgin and giving birth in Aberdeen was scary enough without being on my own once my partner had to leave but the staff deserve all the praise as I couldnt have asked for a better experience in what was a very stressful time for us :)

Dear Hailey,

Firstly let me congratulate you on the birth of your daughter and thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback.

The staff will be delighted to hear that you felt well supported and I will pass on your thanks to them.

Coming from Elgin is a big change alone but to have lockdown on top of that as well as your daughter being poorly for this first few days, must have been very stressful, but I am delighted to hear the midwives and support workers helped you through with excellent care and a good sense of humour.

Thank you for sharing this experience this will hopefully help some other mums from Elgin, who may be anxious to come if they find themselves in a similar position as you.

Kind Regards

Liz
