"Early pregnancy scan"

About: University Hospital (Coventry) / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was having some bleeding in my pregnancy, So I was asked to come for a scan the next morning. I went on my own as I thought there is nothing to worry about, I got there and until then everything was good I was greeted nicely and the staff member that would do my scan introduced themselves nicely but it’s after that I felt disappointed.

According to my dates I should have been 10 weeks and 3 days but when the staff member did the scan on the tummy and said the baby was measuring small and no heart beat. Just straight up, no sorry nothing, then just said will need to do an internal scan to see more clearly.

So I got undressed and laid back in the bed the same member of staff performed the internal scan checked everything. Then again I wasn’t given a sincere apologies just told baby looks 5 and a half weeks and I can’t detect a heart beat told me to get dressed and that there are wipes if I want and said sometimes that happens that babies stop growing for some reason.

But can you imagine being on your own being told all this without a sincere person there so when this staff member then started trying to book me for another scan in 2 weeks I broke down into tears, they did say sorry but not in a sincere way but just because they felt they had to and went on to say that it just happens sometimes but it shouldn't affect further pregnancies.

I got my appointment letter and walked out crying. I somehow managed to drive to my mums house as that was closer and broke down. I then called my midwife who calmed me down and explained that maybe I got my dates wrong and that baby to small to sometimes detect a heart beat so to stay calm rest and wait until the scan in 2 weeks I appreciated the way the my midwife spoke to me and now I would have appreciated if the staff member that did my scan spoke like this to me and told me not to worry and see what happens in two weeks rather then tell me that in the week I may have a big bleed.

I’m scared now and two weeks seem like a very long time to wait as I am still getting small bleed daily when I wipe but I don’t know what to do as I’ve just been told to wait two weeks! There should be more done as I am scared that I will bleed when my husband at work and I have both my daughters at home with me. I was so disappointed with the way I was treated I just needed them to say that not to worry and let’s wait and see what happen in two weeks time then to be told.
