"Disappointing recent stay"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as the patient),

I was very disappointed by the lack of hygiene. Floor and bins had not been swept or emptied for 4 days. When swept they swept round furniture so things were left on floor for days.   Also dinner and teas were served without wearing gloves and with whole hand round top of mug. I would  have thought  more care would have been taken to avoid cross infection. I was also surprised that very few staff wore their identity badges.

Dear Flora Bunda,

I'm both disappointed and concerned to read your feedback about your recent stay in the hospital. The wards are cleaned regularly and our service provider also has an audit programme in place for cleaning, whilst our nursing staff ensure equipment is clean and ready to use.

I've shared your feedback with ISS and asked them to review the award area which I'll review myself. I'll discuss the lack of identification badges with the nurse in charge of the ward.

Kind regards

Rick

Update posted by Flora Bunda (the patient)

The wards may be wiped but not 'cleaned ' by all cleaners. The inside window of room I was in had a dirty smear from the day I was admitted to the day I was discharged. 9 days. I was supposed to be on reverse barrier nursing. Yet cleaners wore gloves to 'clean' but not to serve food.

Dear Flora Bunda

Thanks for posting additional feedback, in reply to Rick's response.

I can advise that gloves are worn when there is anticipated exposure to blood or body fluid contamination and therefore not required to be worn for serving food or beverages. Hand Hygiene, either using soap and water or alcohol based sanitiser, will be undertaken by staff when when serving food or beverages.

Kind regards.

Linda
