My brother-in-law was recently admitted to Craigavon Area Hospital A&E by ambulance, following concern about his inability to eat / drink. He has dementia as well as many physical health issues (lack of hearing being one) and is very unwell.
My sister and he went through triage and then waited a considerable time to see a doctor - very difficult in itself as he had no understanding of why they were there or what was happening to him. He was eventually admitted to a bed in a cubicle though it seemed to my sister that little allowance was made for his dementia or hearing difficulties.
On visiting next day my sister found him in a chair in A&E as it had been decided to discharge him - she hadn't known this in advance, doesn't drive so had to get a lift home to pick up clothes etc. and then return. when she arrived back at the hospital she asked if there was somewhere she could take him to get dressed and was told there was only a toilet.
When in the toilet she realised he still had a canula in his arm and went to ask a nurse if she could come and remove it; after removing it the nurse asked my sister to hold a piece of cotton wool over the entry point, which she did for what she thought was sufficient time. when she stopped doing this blood spurted everywhere causing her and the patient distress, not helped by the fact that people were waiting out side to use this toilet! She called the nurse again - they didn't seem pleased that my sister had stopped holding the cotton wool on his arm.
All in all it was a very unsatisfactory experience for the whole family who are all dreading the possibility that he'd have to be admitted to hospital again.
