My experience was horrific.
I cannot fault the nurses who were thorough and demonstrated great care.
I elected to have my gastroscopy with an anaesthetic applied to the back of my throat, as I was told by this method that although the procedure might be uncomfortable it would not be painful.
However, the anaesthetic was applied to my throat in a manner I consider to be haphazard and hurried. No attempt was made to discover whether the anaesthetic had taken effect or not before the tube was rapidly pushed down my throat. I was fully aware of the tube’s presence for the entire examination which was excruciatingly uncomfortable and painful. After the procedure I felt as though I had a golf ball stuck in my throat and was continually gagging due to the swollen nature of my throat. Several days later and I still have a very raw sore throat and tonsils.
