"Sandyford young people clinic"

About: Sandyford Clinic

(as a parent/guardian),

I am at my wits end with my teenage daughter. After lots of lies and uncertainty around her story’s around promiscuity - I make an appointment at the Sandyford to address issues and the fact I am concerned in regards to potential STI.

I am unable to come in with her so she goes in herself, I am hoping this will be a shock to the system and for her to realise the repercussions but no- she comes out of the place with an implant in her arm! ! ! I am shocked beyond belief that she was able to make this decision- she has no idea what that is or understands the potential issues with this.

This is unbelievable that this can happen without a step in regards to at least getting a day or so to think about it. I feel like you gave her a pass to behave like this? I feel completely let down, I thought it might be useful for a person to discuss the issues around sti this at 15 not to have her offered this and her accept! Unreal! Think people! ! ! Think! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

These kids are not always a statistic or a quota for you to try keep teenage pregnancy down, sometimes their parents are outside begging that you will realise this and instil professional guidance with a slight warning that this is actually not ok when you are 15- not to be given a free pass to continue down this self destructive path.

As an NHS employee who is dealing with this due to needing to work all the hours under the sun at the star of all of this, resulting in less supervision of my teenager and then finding out about her promiscuity due to me trusting her as I went to work, for this to happen is devastating to me and now it will need to come out as she has now read about the many many side effects of this. Think. Just think will you.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sharing your concerns about your daughter’s appointment at Sandyford.

I would like to re-assure you that Sandyford staff always act in the best interests of the young person and will have preceded any discussion about contraception methods with a full assessment of your daughter’s needs in relation to her sexual health and wellbeing.

As you may already know, young people in Scotland are legally able to consent to medical procedures and treatment if the clinician considers them able to understand what is involved. Your daughter’s decision to have an implant fitted will have been taken after discussion with the nurse, within which, information will have been given about possible side effects.

If your daughter no longer wants to use this method of contraception I would recommend she makes an appointment to have further discussion about other contraceptive methods available.

It’s great to hear from a parent who actively wants to talk with their teenager about sexual health and wellbeing. Research tells us that continued, open, conversation with a parent/carer is one of the most protective factors for young people. You might find some the content in the following websites helpful props for further discussion with your daughter.

If you would like to discuss anything directly, you can contact me via the following email address: PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Best wishes,

Jennifer
