My daughter had an appointment recently for contraceptive medication. We had researched this as my daughter has anorexia and has been in a recovery journey for the last 2 years. She has been under the care of the tertiary eating disorder team who have been amazing - a brilliant support to her, the family and us as parents. The contrast with this evenings appointment couldnt have been more different.
My daughter did not feel listened to at all. She specifically asked not to know her weight - something which has been crucial to her recovery. The nurse was very cursory in agreement but read out her weight anyway. Our daughter explained that she would prefer an alternative to the pill prescribed (Rigevidon) as she has read many concerns about this particular pill for women who have mental health concerns. The nurse did not listen to her concerns and dismissed both her and her Mums mental health background.
Overall this was not person centred care, this did not focus on what matters or was important to the patient. And has left my daughter ‘feeling stupid’.
