About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5) University Hospital Hairmyres / Surgical Receiving Unit (Ward 4) University Hospital Hairmyres / Theatres, Recovery & Anaesthetics

(as the patient),

After suffering from an umbilical hernia for over a year (including one failed surgery in December last year) my situation was getting worse and I was looking about 6 months pregnant. After contacting the surgical team and speaking to Karen 10/10 she helped me get my GP refer me to the SACU unit.

The GP initially refused to refer me or see me saying that it was the hospitals responsibility when in fact it was the GP’s.   When I was eventually referred I saw two lovey doctors in the SACU department who had me sent for an urgent CT scan where it was decided I would receive my operation to repair my hernia right away.

Initially I was admitted to Ward 4 where I was looked after by one particular nurse from whom I received first class service. And this was a consistent approach from all the lovely and friendly staff in ward 4 and the operating theatre. I thank them for that.

I was then moved to ward 6. The service I received in ward 4 was sorely missed in ward 6. When I first arrived around 10pm I was left with no help to unpack my things and no nurses came to see me or introduce them self’s to me other than to take my OBS. During night in ward 4 all the curtains around the beds were shut except a small doorway to allow you to go to the toilet but keep your privacy. Unfortunately in ward 6 there was no such night procedure. Ward 6 could defiantly take a leaf out of ward 4’s book.

Dear Reflective patient,

Thanks for taking the time to share what appears to be a very mixed experience of healthcare interactions. I can't comment regarding the GP element but I'm responsible for the hospital areas you've mentioned.

I'm sure you won't be surprised if I tell you I'm both delighted and disappointed with your feedback. I know the staff in these areas personally and I see how hard they work every day. I note you were transferred to Ward 6 later but I would have expected staff to have welcomed you and orientated you to the ward when they had completed their clinical duties; I can only apologise that this didn't happen. I'll share your feedback and observations with the team on Ward 6 for reflection and discussion.

I'll also be sharing your feedback with all the areas you've mentioned positively to congratulate them on their professionalism and the impression they had on you.

I wish you well with your convalescence.

Kind regards

Rick
