"Staff assistance on discharge"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General surgery (Wards 9a, 9b, 9c & 9d)

(as the patient),

I am aged 73. Earlier this year I had spinal surgery and was discharged after three days. As I live alone and friends were on holiday I was going home by taxi. I asked the nurse who was discharging me if someone could accompany from the ward to the hospital entrance. She said that wasn’t possible. As I made my way to the ground floor atrium I had to ask twice for directions. By the time I reached the information desk to ask where to find the taxi stance I felt extremely light-headed. Under normal circumstances I am active, clear-headed and competent but post-op I felt weak and very vulnerable. As I am soon to have another spinal operation I anxious to know how I might avail myself of assistance from the ward to the hospital exit on the day I’m discharged. Thanks.

Hello KeddieGirl,

Under normal circumstances, if a patient was not being collected by family, we would try to have a member of ward staff available to take a patient to the main exit. I am sorry that this was not your experience.

We would be happy to investigate further, or if you wish to discuss with the Lead Nurse prior to admission or the admitting nurse when you return for your next episode of surgery we will ensure there is additional support available on discharge. In order to help with this, could you please email us your details, such as Name, Date of Birth and CHI Number (if you have it to hand) and let us know how we can assist you. You can reach us at:

Best wishes

Susan Groom,

General Manager for Surgery and Anaesthetics
