I had a colonoscopy. The worst thing about the colonoscopy is the bowel preparation. I've gone through this a few times now, always with a morning appointment in the past. This time I had an afternoon appointment, which was much better, because the bowel preparation was divided between evening and morning. Don't believe the guidance allow 2 hours between taking the solution and your appointment, leave 4 hours. Other than that, it's not too bad. I didn't have sedation or gas and air on any of the occasions. Once in the past I had a surgeon who I felt was a bit heavy-handed, but still nothing that I couldn't cope with. This time the surgeon was very gentle and I hardly felt a thing. The nursing staff were great, as was the reception.
I had a CT scan, with contrast. This involves the injection of a contrast dye just prior to the scan. All I felt was a hot flush and the it was over. All the staff were great.
Next was the gastroscopy. I have written a separate report about this.
Finally, I had a barium swallow test. This was by far the easiest of them all. Swallow some barium sulphate solution while being monitored from different angles. Nothing to it. The radiography staff were great.
With the exception of my experience in gastroscopy, the staff at York Hospital could not have been more professional and caring. Thank you all.
