Confusing signage

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Took child to a&e. Followed signs to non respiratory a&e. Went through the doors and there was barriers partially blocking. Went through, seen loads of people sitting waiting. Could not see a reception. Walked through and finally asked a nurse who told me to wait out with the others. Came back out soon after and was very nice. Told me I should have went to another building, but to just go down the corridor, as the ones in the other building would just send me back here anyway (seems like a bad idea to have people running all around the COVID hospital with an emergency). Finally got to a&e and my experience was fine. On the way out I follow signs to exit. Barrier is now blocking. I ask a girl working there and she tells me to just squeeze past barrier. I do this with child and I near hit her head on a shutter as I lift her over the barrier and then trip and almost fall.

I understand these are difficult times, but someone needs to sort this out before a huge problem arises.

Good afternoon. I am responding to your story as I am the Assistant Director for Nursing, Patient Safety, Quality and Experience. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us when you were trying to take your child to our Emergency Department (ED). Firstly I hope that your child is now doing okay and we were pleased to read that when you got to ED that your child received the right care.

We welcome this feedback as it allows us to address the issues that you have raised in a timely way in order to ensure that future experiences for those attending our ED are improved. The points that you have outlined in relation to signage are currently being addressed by our staff and we have already taken steps last week to replace and update signage and look at the barriers that were blocking the exit. We are also liaising with our ED colleagues to review the overall signage for Respiratory ED and Non Respiratory ED.
