"Recent day surgery and gyn ward stay"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Day Surgery Crosshouse Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Long story short I ended up being admitted overnight for pain management and recovery. I feel I I didn’t get the care I deserved. There was no regular pain meds prescribed. The morning after operation myself and another lady in same room were not offered breakfast . When challenged by domestic staff it was said "well they never ordered a breakfast". This was because we were both admitted after menus went out the night before. Later in day it was a challenge to get any staff to give any meds or care. I saw a nurse at 8 am and then again at 1 as I asked for a pain killer. I had been given a total of 1 tablet that day for post op pain. Setting that aside the nurse was rude when I challenged the lack of care. Swearing as they left room to which I said I could hear them.

I was truly upset, I didn’t mean to cause upset. I only wanted some pain relief and care. I felt unwell. I felt it was unprofessional of them.

There were other issues on the ward , like the comments of “your type of surgery usually goes home same day. “

There was no checking for bleeding despite my bp dropping

I was never offered clean pads like they had put on bed in theatre recovery as I was bleeding post hysteroscopy.

Never just checked in to see if we were ok in that room.

They seemed to be doing a fluid balance chart but didn’t ever ask if I had passed urine at all. ( I actually hadn’t passed prior to discharge home)

I felt like a burden .

Its a shame as a nurse myself I know there are excellent staff on gyn ward and the charge nurse was just lovely when I arrived. I am only making this note as if I don’t things won’t improve for future patients

Small note to praise some excellent care. Theatre recovery staff were amazing ,compassionate and empathetic. Checked I was comfortable and checked meds were there on system that I could have once settled on ward. Just lovely.

Dionne in theatre held my hand as I went to sleep she knew I was scared. the anaesthetist was brilliant and so understanding. The little things make the biggest difference.
