"A visit to local A&E department"

About: St John's Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I went to my local department after experiencing a bang to the head.   The reception staff were working hard to manage social distancing and communication with patients through masks and screens.   The only problem with this is that patients have to announce loudly why they are there which impacts on confidentiality and privacy.

The waiting area was safely arranged for distancing.     I was seen quickly, maybe triaged as a priority due to my injury.  The waiting area was busy, so I had anticipated a long wait. I was seen by a Dr and assessed. She was patient, understanding and explained the symptoms of concussion really well to me.     Apologetic for any delays (which weren't that bad! ), gave me relevant information and pain relief.   Reassured me and informed me on steps to take should things have worsened.     It was quick, efficient, person centred and very much appreciated.

Thank you for your communication. I will pass on your very positive comments to the Emergency Department Team. I am glad that the clinical advice and treatment that you received was prompt and that you got the relevant advice and felt reassured. I also note the positive remarks re the waiting area and social distancing.

However I also note the point you make re the masks and difficulty in staff hearing what is being said to them, and the potential for patient information perhaps being over heard. Unfortunately currently staff and the public are required to wear masks, but we will look into the point you make and see if we can do anything to help with this matter.

I hope you have continued to improve since your accident
