"Hearing your name being called in waiting areas"

About: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary

(as the patient),

I have visited the infirmary many times during the last few years in particular area 1. As I am hearing impaired I have found it difficult to hear my name being called on many occasions.

I have observed that many nurses/doctors just appear near the waiting area and shout out names. I would like to suggest that a simple idea of painting a square/circle/ or any other shape on the floor in the waiting area for the person calling out patients names to stand on. This would have a 2 fold benefit as once a person stands there the volume of noise generated by people waiting will decrease and the knowledge that a person's name is being called out will benefit both the staff and patients.

This issue is not just confined to area 1 but to many NHS establishments that rely on patients names being called out from any direction.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. We have also responded personally to this comment as it has been received witin the Patient Relations Department. I have passed your letter to the Quality Champion responsible for the Out Patient Area 1,, who will take this forward at their next Quality Champion Meeting.

6 months down the line and no change, no update response regarding the Quality Champion Meeting... ?

Thank you for your further comment in respect of the observation you brought to our attention back in October 2012.

I have been advised by the Sister on outpatients that they did trial your suggestion on Suite 3 following your comment last year. I am sorry that this was not fed back to you at the time. Unfortunately none of the chairs in any of the waiting areas are in lines and therefore patients waiting to be seen are facing in different directions.

However staff were advised to ensure that when they call a patient to make sure they get a reply before they leave the area. In addition I have been advised that there will be signage displayed in the areas to ask any patients who have hearing difficulties to inform a member of staff to avoid any patient missing their appointment time due.

If all the chairs are facing different directions then failure is 100% guaranteed. Why not try area one at Leigh where all the chairs face the same direction?
