"Misdiagnosed meniscus tear and ruptured ACL"

About: North Manchester General Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I injured my knee at the start of the year whilst playing football. As it happened there was a loud pop that several people around me could also hear and as i tried to get up multiple times i just fell back down. Following this i phoned my brother and dad and they carried me into the car and took me to the A&E where i hopped into the reception on one leg. I got in the A&E at around 4-5pm and must have waited till about 10ish till i was seen.

Once the doctor seen me i was insutructed to go get a X Ray which i had to then hop on one leg to you can even check the (CCTV if you still have it) and then back to the doctors room as the X-Ray showed there was no broken bones they told me something like Wrap it myself when i get home and just ice it because its probably just a sprain which looking back doesnt really make sense because the loud pop and the constant giving way. i was then told to contact my GP if it doesnt get better i wasnt given any crutches or anything to help me walk and i had to then hop out the hospital myself.

A few weeks later my knee was still not feeling any better and i contacted my Gp over the phone because they wouldnt see me in person to ask for a MRI and was told i will not get a MRI and i should just contact the physio. So i contacted the physio and was given a few exercises such as squats and single leg 90 rotational turns to make the muscles around the knee stronger to compensate. whilst i was doing the turns on my injured knee i landed and felt a excruciating pain which left me on the floor and ended up passing out for a short moment ( this was before i had a MRI so impossible to know if this caused further damage)

i believe after this i phoned the Physio and asked if they are able to see me in person to actually assess and see what is wrong with my knee as they refused so i had to book a appointent with a private physio that was able to see straight away that the problem was with the ACL and tell me that the ACL doesnt heal on its own. After this i contacted the NHS physio to tell them this and i was finally able to get a MRI appromixately 5 months after the injury.

Following the NHS Mri the physio was able to tell me that it was not just a ACL rupture but also a meniscus tear and said i would be refered to a orthopaedic doctor so i waited a few weeks and after constantly emailing PALs about my appointment and was given a date thinking finally i am getting somewhere so on this over the phone appointment i was then told that the person i was speaking to doesnt do ACL reconstruction so i will need to be reffered to someone else so now here i am waiting again its now Mid August i am now feeling pains in my other knee and have suffered a sprained ankle on my injured knee

My GP still wont see me in person i have been taking 4-5 different medications for the pain and now have to take pain medication daily to cope

I feel like the situation could have been different if i went to a different hospital maybe the member of staff that treated me was just tired as it was late. i just dont understand how they could not tell it was a serious ligament injury and not a sprain when i heard a loud pop, couldnt bend my knee past 90 degrees it swelled up like a baloon and was giving way when the tinyest bit of weight was put on it

Ps: i wrote this off the top of my head in a rush because im going through a hard time and cant take it anymore i may have missed some details but i will be writing up a full summary soon.
