"Maternity Services"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Despite the Covid pandemic my care throughout my pregnancy was great until the day after I had my daughter. Despite my request to stay another night due to losing a lot of blood during my caesarean and feeling exhausted (I was not given a transfusion as my iron levels where good) I was told that my bed was needed as the Labour ward was busy and they had no where for the new mums to go so I had to leave. I had no choice in the matter. Patient choice went out of the window. Most of the staff on the ward where invaluable to me during my stay especially the midwife assistant, who was excellent and I was very grateful to have their assistance being a first time mum and needing guidance. Another staff member was clearly having a bad day... was snippy and impatient! When I was discharged I was not given a note of times I’d had my painkillers. This would have been very helpful. I requested co-codamol and ibuprofen as my discharge meds but was told I was to have Dihydrocodeine paracetamol and ibuprofen...again patient choice gone. The codeine caused me to be very constipated and pained and this could have been avoided.

I am very sorry to hear that you feel that your care and treatment did not consider your personal choice and preference. We always strive to provide person-centred care. In relation to you staying another night, I apologise that we were not in a position for you to stay another night due to the unit being busy. This does not happen often, and not a decision we take lightly, we do however in these rare circumstances make clinical decisions as to who is deemed most fit and well to go home - again I apologise for this. The medication prescribed for you was deemed most effective for you post surgery and we routinely prescribe a laxitive in attempt to avoid any problems with constipation. I was also very disappointed to hear that a member of the team behaved in the way you described. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss this further in order for me to address this.

Kind Regards

Claire Grieve
