"A lovely supportive environment for natural birth"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Maternity care

(as a service user),

Once again I am writing to thank the wonderful maternity staff at RIE for their help delivering my baby - my second child this time, born last Monday. As with my first, things didn’t quite go to plan and I was so grateful to be again at the Royal. The birthing centre is the perfect place for labour: such a lovely supportive environment for natural birth, that merges seamlessly and calmly with excellent medical care as soon as it is needed.

The staff involved in my care were professional without losing that human touch, and I really appreciated their warmth, compassion and humour. I would like to particularly mention a few people:

Midwives Elaine, Jacqueline and Tooba, who showed real empathy and compassion during my labour and brought incredible energy and some ingenious tricks to help me stay focused through the hard parts (the hat thing was brilliant!)

Dr Alex, who first examined me and who had such a wonderful bedside manner, which really helped me stay positive when I had to transfer to labour ward.

Dr Mary who performed the c-section and left me recovering very quickly (with a neat and discreet scar, thank you!) and who made time to visit me afterwards to talk me through what happened, which was very helpful.

All the theatre staff, who inspired us with confidence with their careful and methodical approach, and explained to us what was happening at each step.

Our baby wouldn’t have made it without you all, and we are deeply grateful.

I’d also like to thank Midwife Alex on ward 119 during my recovery, who gave such individual care and compassion to each of us on the ward, and created a really supportive environment.
