"Awful experiences with Somerset Talking Service"

About: Somerset NHS Foundation Trust / Adult community mental health

(as a service user),

I referred myself to Talking Service via the online form .

I received a call initially  from a very caring and pleasent woman ,who did an  initial assessment with me..Some of the questions were quite challenging  which brought some of my past mental health problems back. At this interview she assured me the service would be able to help me with the depression I was experiencing  and when that was sorted ,would be able to help with the anxiety I have.

About a week later I was contacted by a member of staff to arrange my first treatment appointment.

This first appointment was also my last. From the the very beginning of the appointment  the therapist was evasive and spoke to me like a robot.  When I asked a question they couldn't give me an answer.  I explained that I didnt really understand the form they had sent me to fill prior to this meeting. They would not discuss this with me, just kept saying that the results from the form meant that I couldnt have treatment from Talking Services. The therapist said they would email me leaflets that might help.

I tried to explain to them that I needed help not leaflets to read, that I had tried to find ways of helping myself but needed human contact and that I was scared that I would fall deeper into the depression and I did not want a repeat of my past history .The staff member would not discuss this.

I was left feeling devastated..

I have not ventured out side my front gate since March  ,if I had had help I am sure I would be able by now to have  gone for walks and been able to enjoy life .

Talking services should not offer help if they are unable to give it.

I feel totally rejected. I find it difficult  to talk on the phone too, but I  had plucked up the courage to it and they wiped that away too. I will not answer any phone that rings now as it brings back awful memories  of that phone call when they pulled the plug on any treatment .

Dear Adelaide60

I'm so sorry to hear that your experience of our service has so deeply disappointed you. Myself and my clinicians take our work very seriously and always strive to help patients where we can. We help thousands of people every year and get regular positive feedback. But every patient is important and I would very much like to be able to look into your experience further, sort out what went wrong and help you get the support you need. To do that I would need to be able to identify you in our database. I appreciate you have said telephone is not a good medium for you, but if you feel able, please call me on 07733 311654. Alternatively you might email our PALS service, mark it for my attention and they will forward it on to me: PALS.Community@somersetft.nhs.uk

Regards,
Marc McDonagh - Service Lead, Somerset Talking Therapies
