"Only the doctor seemed to care"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Sadly I had to attend Eden for blood tests due to a possible miscarriage. I had an appointment and buzzed the door to attend, when I was let through a support worker came up to me, didn’t ask my name or make any introductions and just shoved a tympanic thermometer in my ear and then shouted back to the front desk my temperature. It took me by surprise to say the least!

Then barked at me to go and wash my hands, I was apologetic that I hadn’t seen the sink and the signs behind all the boxes in the corridor. None of the staff spoke to me or asked if I was ok. I then waited in the waiting room which isn’t exactly calming or reassuring for women who are attending only for miscarriages, terminations and other horrible gynae related issues. You would think that given the sadness of the ward that the staff would at least try to be kind and empathetic.

The doctor called me through to the treatment room and took my blood, and was lovely, actually the only member of staff who spoke to me like a person and not treated me like a task.

The treatment room had blood all up the examination lamp with a big handprint on the top and there was blood on the drip stand. I felt like I was sitting in the scene of something pretty horrid. Once my bloods were done the doctor showed me out.

I’m a nurse, and I work in the hospital and I would never treat a patient the way I was treated, they should be ashamed of themselves. They knew why I was attending and I had managed to keep it together for my appointment but inside my heart was breaking and only the doctor seemed to care. Terrible terrible care, I hope I never have to go there again.

Dear Letdownjuly20,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us, I was very sorry to see that you felt you had inadequate care from the staff on Eden Ward. As you can appreciate, at the moment with restricted visiting, it is imperative that we know as staff who is coming on and off the ward, so I am shocked that you were not asked your name. As we haven't had a ward clerk working on a Saturday for some weeks, I am baffled as to whom or why the staff member, would need to shout your temperature back to the front desk.

Unfortunately, blood tests of this nature normally are taken in clinics, however they do not operate at a weekend and so ladies like yourself are required to come to the ward for this to happen. Due to it being a busy ward receiving surgical patients, our day room would have been the only place for you to wait.

I am disheartened that the treatment room was in a poor state. I would appreciate a telephone conversation about this matter as being the ward sister I would like to take this forward. You can contact me by calling the ward direct; 01872 252090

If you would like to raise your concerns formally, please do speak to the Patient and Family Experience Team on 01872 252793 or by emailing rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net

Thank you again for highlighting these issues to us, I will ensure that your story is shared with the staff on Eden ward so that they can reflect on your experience so we can make improvements.

Best wishes,

Lisa
