"My Partners mental health and addiction journey"

About: Partnership and community development / Addiction Services Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a carer),

My partner was on a detox program  and things had been going well from feb until near the end of March when lockdown hit the nation. The detox meds where due to finish on the at the beginnng of April but she was also due to have got other help to  come off the meds and how to manage daily life after treatment. The day lockdown happened she literally was told we wont be seeing you until further notice as we are closing.

To me I understood but at the same time was extremely disappointed as she had been doing so well considering until 2 months prior she hadn't left the house in 4 years due to her illnesses.   Within 3 weeks of the end of the tablets she had turned in to a complete mess, her mental health took a serious dive and she wanted to start using again.     All we were told was sorry we cant see patients face to face depression and anxiety is normal in this situation! !   You dont tell someone who tells you she is actively suicidal that it's normal to feel depressed, just try distract yourself and keep going out!

It took 3 emergency  A& E  visits and emails from the mental health teams plus and email from my own care avocate for them to agree to help her again!     I truly believe I am lucky she is still here now and that it is only down to me watching her 24 hours a day and physically stopping her killing herself 4 times in 2 weeks. She always felt some form of hope after seeing the mental health team in the hospital as they were lovely and trying their best in the circumstances but lost faith as it didnt go anywhere the first few times.
