"Antenatal care"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C2 Maternity care

(as a service user),

It has been disjointed and extremely poorly organised. Also as the patient I am made to feel like I am to blame for all of it. I see 3 medical professionals as part of my antenatal care and not one of them knows what the other is doing. They speak to me like I’m a child and expect me to answer their questions regards the basis of the decisions being made about my care, I’m not a doctor or midwife so I’m unsure how to answer. After this experience I’ll never go through pregnancy on NHS care, it’s at the very best adequate as in I have enough faith that myself and my child will survive with minimal trauma but not a lot beyond this.

Dear Kelsmac

My name is Helen and I am the Lead Midwife at Antrim Hospital.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

I’m sorry to hear that your care has been disjointed and poorly organised, and for the lack of communication you speak of between the 3 medical professionals involved in your care. This does not meet the high standards we hope to achieve for our patients.

On occasions when there are different professionals involved in care giving, they ask the women what they know. The reason that they do this is to ensure you are aware of the plan of care. However, I am very disappointed to hear that staff have spoken to you as though you are a child. Again, this does not meet the standards we want to achieve for our patients.

Your feedback is very important to us. It helps us to learn and improve. I will ensure your feedback is shared with staff so that they can reflect on their practice and learn from the issues you have raised.

I would really love to have a chat with you in relation to your feedback and help ensure that you have a more positive experience for the remainder of your pregnancy. Please could you call me on 07833231815. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you

Helen Weir
