"No access to a buzzer"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted for surgery to repair my fractured ankle.

Surgery went well and I was in ward 9 for recovery where I was well looked after.

I was moved from ward 9 through the night to ward 18 as they needed my bed. After an issue with where to put me, I was given a side room. The staff forgot to give me a buzzer for the room and had placed my crutches out of my reach at the other end of the room. At half past 7 in the morning I had to ring the ward from my mobile phone repeatedly for 30 minutes until someone answered to make them aware that I was stuck in the room and was desperate for the toilet. I was so humiliated as I almost wet myself. I was then left to attempt to wash myself and pack up all of my belongings as no visitor's were allowed and they said they were too busy to help. I was made to feel like a complete inconvenience during my stay.

We offer our sincere apologies for the care experience that you describe. We advocate a person centred care experience for all patients but your description of your stay with us certainly does not demonstrate that.

I would like to investigate this further. Please could you contact me so that I can look into what happened.

Kind regards,
