"Recovery from alcohol addiction"

About: Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Aldershot

(as a service user),

Having had a serious alcohol addiction problem, I felt that I was in an endless downward spiral of despair, I knew I needed help, not just physically and medically, but more importantly, I needed to break out of the old habits that led me to drink excessively.

That is really what Inclusions is all about, and without it, I would not be where I am today (on the road to recovery) or writing this.

It's now been a little over 2 1/2 months since my last drink - something I didn't think I would be saying, or indeed would be possible - I really had hit rock bottom, and was putting my life at serious risk, it's not a pleasant realisation, but it's something you have to acknowledge in order to start the whole process of recovery.

The key to recovery has lain in the excellent groups Inclusions has to offer, and when they all shut down due to Covid, I fell off the wagon big time (again).

Very fortunately, Inclusion realises just how important these groups are to recovery, so now offer on-line group sessions, and these have proved invaluable for my recovery.

In these groups, you meet people who really understand what you are going through, because they are going through it, or have been through it themselves, and there is never a sense of being judged, or looked down on - you are treated as an equal, and someone who's looking for help, in my case to turn my life around.

There is no "magic bullet", you need to persevere to overcome the demons, whatever they may be, and they're different for all of us, but that is why the group sessions are so important, you may/will find things that have caused others problems that you had never even realised were causing you the same problems, and you will discover ways of coping with those situations and get yourself gradually back to the person you were before the alcohol took over your whole life, you will get encouragement and support, and if you have a little lapse, someone there to pick you up again.

Get in the groups, STAY in the groups, it might, as in my case, just save your life.

Thank you for your recent post and congratulations on being 2 1/2 months sober.

I am delighted that you have found the groups so helpful in your recovery. It sounds like you have been on quite a journey but through your own courage, perseverance and hard work and accessing the support you have needed through the online groups, you have been able to acknowledge where you are in your recovery and apply the coping strategies you have learnt to take you forward.

We cannot under estimate the value of attending groups. As you say they provide support, encouragement and learning from both your peers and the group facilitators. I will pass on your positive feedback to the Aldershot Team.

I would like to wish you all the very best in your continued recovery.

Stay safe and well.
