"It all adds up"

About: The Whittington Hospital

Let me first start by saying I really appreciate everything the NHS does and the risks NHS workers are currently taking in coming into work everyday. That being said, there is definite room for improvement within the antenatal/ maternity dept at Whittington in terms of general organization and, in some instances, staff training. Firstly, the receptionists often completely ignore you when you arrive - they carry on talking to colleagues taking several minutes to ask what you want. A simple greeting and " I'll be with you in one minute" would be absolutely fine but many of them lack basic courtesy / communication skills. Second, almost every single time they have called me in for initial blood pressure reading to be taken ( always at least half an hour after actual appt should have started) they call me by my middle name. The first time this resulted in me waiting an additional hour to be seen bc I assumed they were calling someone else. At the most recent appt, I asked if the patient being called was actually X and stated my full name to which I got a very snappy response of " no I meant ..." And had my middle name and last name stated. This doesn't even make sense BC my yellow book doesn't state my middle name. I assume it's wrong on a computer somewhere and I've mentioned it every single time I've been in for an appt ( at least 8x) yet it recurs every single time I'm there. This doesn't instill confidence. At most recent appt a member of staff came up to me and asked my name to see if I was on their list of appointments and asked " are you about 12 weeks?" When I was actually 34. Quite shocking as a baby bump at 34 w is pretty hard to mix up w a 12 w one. Once again, this really doesn't instill confidence. Additionally, there's no consistency with who is and isn't wearing PPE in the clinic. A friend mentioned she thought maybe staff had had the " antibody" test. I don't know but again it doesn't inspire when one member of staff has a plastic apron on and a face mask and others stroll around without anything yet still stop to talk to you and get quite close / give you injections / take your blood pressure etc. Finally, I have never ever had an appointment that happens on-time. This isn't the biggest problem as I know it must be very difficult to stick to timings but the system seems to be " pop up and see us after your scan" rather than being given an appt time for your scan and one for your doctor which has meant some days I've been at the hospital from 9am -2pm. Again, that's fine but if we hadn't.been in lockdown and I had been physically going into work it creates issues w HR and it being suspicious a 9 am appt means you don't return to work until 3 pm or later ( that happened to me twice prior to lockdown). Again none of it is a massive issue but all of it combined just reflects a general disorganisation on the whole which sadly doesn't instill confidence for the actual labour/delivery. Simple steps could be taken to rectify much of this.

Dear enquirer,

Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry to read of the experience you have had when visiting the antenatal/ maternity department.

Please could you advise whether you would like to discuss the issues you have raised with the Service Manager or whether you are happy for me to just share your feedback with the managerial team.

With very best wishes

Cindy Leahy
