"Receiving counselling following a breakdown (Anxiety & Depression)"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

I went onto the waiting list for counselling when I was signed off work with anxiety and depression. In the end I was signed off work for 3 months, something that I never thought would happen to me.

When I started counselling I did not know what to expect. I knew I needed help in certain areas so that I could better understand what was going on inside me but didn't know if or how this would help. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised.

Through the weeks that I met with my counsellor he very gently asked me what had been going on and what I wanted to talk about. I never felt pressured or uncomfortable. It was refreshing to talk to someone who was not a friend or family member and someone not involved in my day to day life. I was able to open up about many things from the present and the past which I had not dealt with before and my counsellor helped me to see these things in a much healthier way. During the weeks between sessions I was able to think about and process what we had talked about. Each week I felt I was learning about me and feeling better.

My experience of Counselling with Inclusion Thurrock has been a very positive one. It has helped me see and deal with things I had been carrying with me for a long time. I now see things in a different light and am able to take what I have learnt from these sessions forward to live in a better way. I am able to not let all the things get to me which used to. I am able to deal with situations and people in a much healthier way. I am able to see others differently and have more understanding. More than anything I understand me more and that is the key I feel to internal happiness.

I would like to thank my counsellor (Ian) who has helped me to grow, develop and learn about me. My outlook on life is much improved due to his care, expertise and knowledge.

If any one is considering counselling, please don't hesitate. It can be the key to a better future for you. It can help you to become the person you were always meant to be, before life situations got in the way. Trust the process, don't give up and take this time to work on you, you deserve it.

Dear FeelingFree777,

Thank you for being so open in sharing your experience.

Beginning therapy can cause apprehension, like you said, as often people don’t know what to expect. We do try to ensure that clients feel comfortable and are able to open up in sessions, which some people can find difficult with someone they don’t know. Often however, like you mentioned, clients do find this detachment from the rest of their lives helpful.

While the sessions are an opportunity to talk about events that have been difficult for us, the time in between sessions is just as important to process this in more depth and to practice any skills or techniques you have discussed with the therapist. It sounds like you were aware of this and were able to make the most of your therapy, within and outside of the sessions.

I’m glad to hear that you felt that your experience of therapy was helpful and that you have learnt so much about yourself during the process. I’m sure Ian will be very pleased to hear you’re doing so well.

Thank you for encouraging others to get in touch with our service, we know that it seems like a big step but you’re right, the benefits are worth the initial trepidation. We all do deserve to look after ourselves and congratulations on doing this for yourself.

All the best for the future,

Chloe Anderson.
