"Frenotomy in children Glasgow"

About: Glasgow Services Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatrics

(as a relative),

My grandson was born with a tongue tie. He was not being breastfeed, and did not have difficulty having bottles.   When he started to wean, My daughter in law spoke to the Health visitor and the GP about having the tie cut. They both advised unless he lost weight they would not refer and there was actually no provision in NHS GGC for this service. We feel the lack of advice since birth was based on the fact the baby was not breastfed, surely every parent has a choice to be asked do they want the baby referred. She has had a lack of advice from his birth and by staff at primary care level which is disappointing. I phoned the children's hospital in February and I was advised that there is no service in Glasgow. I notice from another care opinion story that the Lead Nurse mentions a possible change in the delivery of service. My grandson is now 11 months and my daughter in law would like to be referred (when available due to Covid) however no one knows how to or where to refer to. I would be grateful if someone can give clear information if this service is available in Glasgow.

Dear teeny05,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion

Please accept my apologies if you have been advised there is no service within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. We deliver specialist ENT clinics for review and division of tongue tie, to access the clinic a referral is sent by your GP

A tongue tie will only be divided if it is clinically indicated, if it is impacting on feeding and weight gain. If your daughter feels that this is the case I would advise she contacts her GP to request a referral

I hope you find this this information helpful

Best wishes to you, your daughter and your family

Patricia Friel

Dear Patricia

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will pass this information on to my daughter in law and ask that she speaks to her GP again.

Weaning him has been difficult and very messy, he has not got any weight issue as she has perceived with feeding him, however food does not stay in his mouth it tends to pour out the other side.

We will arrange a consultation with the GP and hopefully get him referred to ENT and take it from there.

Thanks again
