"The caring extra touches"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

I had a short procedure under general anesthetic down In the theatres at the Hallamshire Hospital.

I suffer from mental health issues and can get extremely distressed in this environment. I took my soft toy bunny down with me and was allowed to hold him as I was put to sleep. The staff were lovely, introducing themselves and putting me at ease and chatting and bantering about my bunny and his name and arguing about what colour he was!

When I came round I was quite distressed as is usual for me but the staff did a really good job of explaining where I was, that I was safe, realising that giving me an extra blanket and getting me up to the ward ASAP would help me settle. But the biggest thing for me was the lovely touch that my toy bunny was beside me when I woke up and that he had been given his very own hospital name tag! Small things make a big difference. Thank you.

What a lovely account of how you were made to feel less anxious and thank you for sharing this. Your kind words and positive feedback will be fed back to the theatre staff who will be pleased to receive such comments.

Kind regards
