About: The Great Western Hospital

During recent visit for surgery on a foot for osteomyelitis I was taken to Teal Ward. above the entrance door to the ward there is a notice which reads, "Old person short stay" not a very flattering description maybe the words Senior Citizens would more appropriate. Remember you too will become a senior citizen one day.

Thank you for your comments and we are sorry if any offence has been caused. We recognise the need to treat all our patients with the dignity they deserve and strive to do this at all times. The sign you mention actually refers to the “Older Persons Short Stay Unit”. Within Teal Ward, we treat older patients who do not need to be admitted for more than 72 hours in the Older Persons Short Stay Unit. As the name of the unit suggests, we aim to help this group of patients to return home as safely and quickly as possible.”
