"No need for CT, failure in care"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 12)

(as a relative),

I am writing this on behalf of my brother.

My 56 year old brother has a large protruding lump on his chest and associated pain. He has attended his phenomenal GP continually for months who couldn't have done more, he arranged X-ray after X-ray and referred him to University Hospital Hairmyres

He was seen by a consultant who reviewed his X-rays and stated no need for CT. At least 3 times if not more he specifically asked for a CT Scan. He was refused, told there was no need. A large visible lump which was totally dismissed for 7 MONTHS!!

The lump continued to grow and the pain continued to get worse. To the point McMillian nurses had to attend for pain management.

After another trip to A&E due to his uncontrolled pain he was admitted to respiratory ward and a CT was urgently done.

My 56 year old brother has now been diagnosed with terminal Cancer. We as a family are devastated and have no doubt he has been failed in his care.

Dear utterly disappointed

I am so very sorry to hear that your brother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer; I cannot begin to imagine what he and your family are going through at the moment. Please extend my sincere apologies to your brother that he has experienced the challenges you describe, if you or your brother would be willing to contact us and give us some more details we would be able to look in depth at your brother’s journey. I appreciate doing this will not help with what you are all going through right now but it is important to look at every step so far we can share with you any and all information and communication available. It would also allow us the chance to discuss support available and make sure this is accessible.

Please contact us on 01355 585325

Warm Regards

Kirsty
