"Camhs airdrie/cumbernauld"

About: Camhs airdrie/cumbernauld team

(as a parent/guardian),

We were originally under West Dunbartonshire camhs team who were brilliant with my daughter taking the time to let her explain her difficulties in her own time and understanding she has difficulty talking to people initially that she doesn't know. My daughter has asd and with that comes the shyness low self esteem and she also has suicidal thought and actions. She also has gender identity issues.

Under the West Dunbartonshire team she was prescribed anti depressants, melatonin and anti anxiety medication shortly after we moved home to North Lanarkshire due to better schools to meet her needs in that area. This is where the trouble began.

At her first meeting with the clinician based at airdrie/cumbernauld camhs. As soon as we entered the room they asked my daughter her name my daughter obviously didn't respond and just looked at me to answer as they were a stranger to her and understandably her anxiety levels were high, they immediately told me off for answering for her and stated they were sure she could talk for herself. I then expressed that I was sometimes having issues with her taking her medication and rather than trying to suggest alternatives or speak to her about the importance of her medication they just turned to her and said well if you dont want it then don't take it and cancelled her prescriptions which in itself its dangerous to just stop.

I then expressed a difficulty with her diet (expecting maybe a referral for a dietician) instead they just said well if you dont buy bad food choices she can't eat them (she's 14 and not the only child in the house) i stated that if food wasn't offered that she liked she would refuse to eat at all (has previously done this for 2 days not eaten a thing) they then looked her up and down and said -well its not like she is going to waste away. Who says that to a then 13 year old girl with mental health issues and low self esteem.

We have since had 2 appointments with them in the hope things would improve but she has come out of every appointment worse than she went in. She has recently expressed to me that she would like to go back onto her medication if she could see a different clinician. So I phoned camhs and explained all the issues only for the clinician to call me back stating that if she wants her medication back she has to see him as apparently he is the only clinician there that can prescribe medication. How is this right or fair for my child? What ever happened to the girfec regulations as surely this can be considered right for my child. She either doesn't get the medication she needs or to get it she has to have appointments with a person that speaks down to her and mean and makes her feel awful about herself.

Under west Dunbartonshire she was seen at the hospital every 2 weeks and also had icamhs coming to the house once a week since moving to North Lanarkshire in over 18 months she has only been seen 3 times.

Dear Barkby1983,

Thank you for taking the time to write in. I am sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied with the assessment and service offered by the CAMHS service locally. As you have noted a number of issues here and highlighted comparisons with previous experience in another Board. We would want to take the opportunity to examine these issues properly and give you a response to each point. To do so it might be best if you could contact our Patient Affairs Department and lodge your concerns to allow a full investigation. We would seek consent from your daughter to allow this to go forwards.
