I was born with a hiatus hernia which has always affected me quite severely. I am now in my late twenties and am still having flare-ups of severe gastritis leading to dehydration and hospitalisation. Throughout the years I learned to manage it, seeing various specialists to help with self-management. in 2019 I received both an endoscopy and a gastric emptying scan (takes a wee while to get though this which can test your patience, plus you aren't allowed to consume any fluids or food prior which can mean you feel a agitated or irritable anyway). The staff were lovely and polite (this scan and endoscopy took place at the New Victoria Hospital).
I have had 3 endoscopes in the past 3 years (one per year) to check if there is anything new or worsening things going on internally. I had the pleasure of meeting a very pleasant and concerned consultant at the QEUH gastro department to discuss what options I have in terms of this hernia and longer-term.
We had a chat about various options following the results of the most recent endoscopy and gastric emptying study confirming I still have the hiatus hernia and also been diagnosed with gastroparesis (slow emptying stomach). Both of these combined certainly explained all my symptoms and the horrible cycle of it. I also have learned through the years how much my symptoms flare-up as a reaction to psychological distress so that helps me manage my symptoms without any serious intervention.
The staff were all wonderful and helpful, both the nurses and consultants.
I would like to express my gratitude here and to share the positive experience I had with these departments.
The consultant surgeon was a Mr. Drummond who was very helpful, polite, listened to me and reassured me regarding the route of treatment.
Overall, great experience. Thank you to all who assisted me.
"Gastroenterology experience and lovely staff"
