"Too long to wait in these circumstances"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

On 12 June I dislocated my replacement hip.   The pain was excruciating.   I called for an emergency ambulance and was told it would be quick. The ambulance arrived almost 3 hours later.   The paramedics were excellent and dealt efficiently and sympathetically.   Once the ambulance arrived my treatment was perfect. The ambulance crew stayed with me till I was handed over in A&E. I was attended to very quickly.   I felt reassured by the staff and their calmness.   The doctor who attended me was with me throughout the journey and continuity of care was excellent.   I was admitted overnight and discharged the next day. I was seen by a physiotherapist and given aids to use at home.   Once home the memory of the experience fades but I can still recall the pain and accompanying panic while waiting for the ambulance.   I feel 3 hours is too long to wait in these circumstances. Having said that I appreciate the time spent on me and all the other cases attended to that day.

Dear Shanadog,

I am sorry that there was a delay in response from the SAS and my colleagues from the Scottish Ambulance Service will respond to this separately.

In terms of your care within University Hospital Wishaw I am pleased that you were treated quickly and that your care was coordinated with calmness and excellence. I will ensure this information is passed onto the Senior Charge Nurse and staff.

I hope that you are feeling better and on the road to recovery.

Best wishes

Andy

Dear Shanadog,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us here on CareOpinion. I am sorry to hear that you dislocated your hip, that sounds really sore. I am also sorry that you had a 3 hour wait for one of our resources to attend to you, that is a long time. I would like to have that looked into for you and provide you with a response. I would be greatful if you could email my team at Scotamb.feedback@nhs.net and provide them with your details and the details of the incident, specifically the date, time and address we attended. Also, as part of that, if you would be so kind as to consent to the sharing of the kind comments you made about our crew. I am pleased to hear that they treated you well and stayed with you until the staff at the hospital could continue your care (in the excellent fashion that you describe which is great!)

I hope that you are feeling better now and once again, please accept my apologies on behalf of the Service for your prolonged period of pain and anxiety.

Kind Regards

Alan
