"The hospital has failed to advise"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 12)

(as a relative),

I understand the NHS has been under tremendous pressure over the last few months. However, my mum was admitted to Hairmyres in June 2020. First of all, paramedics took my mum from her house and failed to explain anything to my dad. She was admitted and the first contact from the hospital was to advise she was “very unwell” she was being asked to sign a DNR, as they said it would be cruel to try and bring her back, and they’d call during the night if she deteriorated.

Can you imagine receiving that call for your 65 year old wife/mother?! Harrowing does not cover it.

The hospital has so far failed to advise:

1. Why my mother fell unwell

2. If she is at risk of it again

3. What medication she is now receiving

4. How she ACTUALLY IS rather than just saying “comfortable night”

My sister and I have just spoken to her on the phone and she is breathless and uncomfortable. Why is she being left like this?! She is currently on the ward at Hairmyres and this is just not on!! I get the distinct impression there is a lack of care and treatment and I want to know why. Is this where our NHS is now?!

Dear LD84

This must be a very stressful time for you and your family and I am sorry to hear that you are getting the impression that the care and treatment your mum is receiving is lacking, I can offer assurance that this would not be the standard that this ward would usually deliver. It is challenging at the moment to try and keep all family members up to date especially over the phone where we are limited in the information we can share. We ask that there is a nominated next of kin to help us with this process and I know in your mums case this contact has been identified. We would appreciate the chance to explore your feedback further and if you could contact us through the following number 01355 585325 this would allow us to discuss how we can improve the communication to offer assurance regarding your mums care and treatment during her stay with us.

Kind Regards

Kirsty
