"We miss him but his suffering is over."

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Craigavon Area Hospital / Stroke Care (2 south)

(as a service user),

My husband James was admitted to Craigavon Area Hospital in April 2020 suffering from a stroke. One of my daughters is in lockdown but my three other daughters were available to go to the hospital.

The first four days Jim was critical and a visit was allowed. After a slight improvement we were not allowed any visits for 9 days. ( This was so difficult but we understood there were rules and regulations. The Doctors and nurses kept in touch by telephone on a daily basis to tell us how Jim was doing. Sometime when Jim was a little bit alert they would face time us. Jim passed away in May 2020 and my daughters were able to be there and spent his last few hours with him, this was very comforting to us as a family as we were always anxious that Jim would pass away alone. The staff phoned us the following day to sympathise with us. How thoughtful was this.

The doctors in A&E were amazing and treated Jim so well getting scans done quickly and doing everything possible. We will always be indebted to the amazing staff in A&E and Ward 3 North. We miss our lovely Jim but his suffering is over.

Dear marshz66.

Thank you so much for taking time to tell us about your recent experience when sadly your husband, James, passed away. On behalf of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to you and your family. It was unfortunate that, due to the restrictions caused by the recent pandemic, you were not able to see your husband for 9 days. However as you say it was a comfort to know that your daughters were able to be with their father so that he was not alone when he passed away. I will share your story with all the staff who were involved in your husband’s care and I know they will appreciate your feedback. I hope you and your daughters are keeping well during this very difficult time.

Kind regards

Christine
